About The Big Heart
Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi (Wife of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah) was appointed as UNHCR's first Eminent Advocate in May 2013. In this role, Sheikha Jawaher helped increase public awareness about refugees and the work of UNHCR, with a focus on children. Her previous work with charities and her fund-raising initiatives are testament to her commitment to helping relieve the suffering of people affected by war, especially women and children.
The Big Heart campaign for the Syrian refugee children was launched by Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher in partnership with Salam Ya Seghar for refugee children, to commemorate the International World Refugee Day on the 20th of June 2013. The campaign started raising funds to provide the Syrian refugee families with emergency aid, health facilities and education in partnership with UNHCR. The Big Heart has donated approximately $14.5million for relief work in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Egypt.
During the immediate relief phase of the campaign, the Big Heart Campaign provided life-saving medical intervention for over 265,000 Syrian refugees and gave more than 400,000 others vital food and cash. The ‘Warm Hearts’ winter phase saved hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees from the frost-ravaged sub-zero temperatures of Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria itself, by raising urgent funds for warm shelters, blankets and clothing. The campaign in its third phase is now focused on an equally urgent need: education. Lack of education threatens to produce a lost generation of Syrian refugees. Since the Syrian crisis continues unabated, the campaign also continues to create awareness and raise funds.
